Freeland Volleyball broke their “bridesmaid” streak with a tournament win on Saturday going undefeated for the day (6-0). The Falcons did not give up a set, however being pushed to 25-23 against Beaverton in pool play and again nearly losing a set to the Beavers in the final match 27-25.
“We are excited for the tournament win,” said Coach Penny Cook. “We have come very close to winning the two previous tournaments, taking second place in both. This will be a good confidence builder for us.”
All four teams in the semifinal matches were from the pool. The Falcons defeated Carrolloton 25-9, 25-10 in the quarter final, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart 25-7, 25-16 in semifinal and Beaverton in the championship match 27-25, 25-14.
Junior Bailey DeSander lead the team in kills and digs with 49 and 47 respectively and also added 7 aces. Junior Noelle Duley was right on DeSander’s heals in each category with 42 kills, 40 digs and 3 aces for the day. Junior Betsy Cook had her best day dishing out 10.1 assists per match and 4 blocks. Senior Allison Shea lead the team behind the service line with 10 of the 34 total team aces. Sophomore Taylor Bakos lead the team with 10 blocks.
The wins on Saturday bring their overall record to 18-3-1. Conference play begins on Wednesday, September 14 against at Shepherd.
