Multiple Teams · Volleyball Upset by Vikings in District Finals

After defeating the Swan Valley Vikings twice earlier in the season, the third time proved elusive as the Falcons dropped a hard-fought 25-22, 18-25, 22-25, 25-16, 14-16 nail-biter before a raucous crowd at Bangor John Glenn Thursday night.

Senior Betsy Cook, who with her 54 assists, places her as #12 on the all-time MHSAA record book with 3738 career assists, led Freeland.  Senior Noelle Duley had 25 kills and fellow senior Bailey DeSander 30 digs.

The Flying Falcons would like to thank all the students, staff, coaches, and administrators for all the support this season. Especially all those that showed up for this match and cheered louder than the Vikings!

The Falcons end their season with a TVC Central Division Championship and 9th ranked in Class B with a record of 45-10-2, 7-0 conference.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Volleyball Flies Into District Final

Ninth ranked Freeland played like a top 10 team tonight in the Class B district semifinal against Bullock Creek with 3 straight wins 25-6, 25-8 and 25-9 at Bangor John Glenn High School.

After a slow start and a 3-3 tie in set 1, Freeland quickly found its rhythm and 21-5 lead after a Taylor Bakos kill. Four more service points and an ace by junior Madison Wegner brought a quick end to the set for the Lancers.

Three more service aces by senior Noelle Duley gave the Falcons a 21-6 cushion in set 2.  Continued strong serving and error free defense gave the TVC Central champions a 17 point win.  In the final set, 2 service aces by sophomore Caitlin Pistro gave the Falcons a 7-1 lead and another ace by Hannah Ruppel increased the margin to 21-8 before Freeland cruised to a 3 set win.

Freeland was led by Noelle Duley and Taylor Bakos with 9 kills each, Duley with 6 aces and Betsy Cook with 30 assists and 1 block.  The Falcons improve to 49-9-2 and  will play in the district final against the conference rival Swan Valley who swept host John Glenn in the second match of the night. Final match will take place Thursday at John Glenn slated to begin at 6:00 pm.

Multiple Teams · Varsity Volleyball Sweeps 1st Round of Districts

The Lady Falcons won the first round district match-up against Saginaw Carrollton hosted by Bangor John Glenn Monday night 25-9, 25-6, 25-20.

In the first set, 5 kills by Noelle Duley, and 4 more by Caroline Talaga coupled with solid defense carried the Falcons to the win.  Freeland served up 10 aces in set 2, including 5 aces in a row from sophomore Caitlin Pistro to give the Falcons a 9-1 lead.  Another sophomore, Lauren Moon served an ace to increase the margin to 20-4.

It was a much closer contest in set 3 as the Falcons offense sputtered.  The Falcons trailed by scores of 4-6 and 10-15 before they came back behind 2 Betsy Cook aces to give Freeland a 18-15 lead they would not relinquish.

Freeland was led by Noelle Duley with 10 kills, Bailey DeSander with 12 digs, Caroline Talaga with 3 blocks and Betsy Cook with 10 aces and 31 assists.  The Falcons improve to 44-9-2 and play next against 2nd round opponent Bullock Creek at Bangor John Glenn on Wednesday night at 5:30.

6th grade parents:
Your 6th wrestler is not required to attend the competitions where they are not allowed to compete, however it is my preference that they attend to support the team.  If your 6th grade wrestler does attend, he must wear his warm-ups and wrestling shoes. I would like him to warm-up with the team, sit on the bench with the team, and cheer with the team.  Thanks for your support in this matter.
Thanks,

Coach Rosebush

Multiple Teams · Varsity Volleyball Places 2nd in TVC Tourney

Fifteen of the top TVC volleyball teams met at Alma High School on Saturday. For fourteen of those teams there was some doubt in the outcome of each game.  For # 2 ranked Class B defending tourney champ North Branch however, there was only 1 uncertainty; who besides them would advance to the championship game?

Early in the day, the Freeland Falcons began to answer that question while sweeping thru pool play by defeating Essexville Garber 25-19, 25-20 and St Louis 25-12, 25-19 to earn a #2 seed in the Gold Division.  They swept 7thseeded Garber again 25-7, 25-19 and Valley Lutheran 25-19, 25-21 to earn a spot in the championship game versus North Branch.

The Lady Falcons would lose both games against the Broncos by identical 17-25 scores.  Freeland did however lead 4-1 early in set one after a Caitlin Pistro ace.  North Branch rallied to tie the game at 10-10 before their combination of strong hitting and defense prove too much for Freeland.  In set two, the Falcons again led 6-5 on a Betsy Cook kill, and led again at 8-7 on a Taylor Bakos ace.  North Branch then went on a 7-3 scoring run to take a 3 point lead and never looked back.

On the day, the Falcons were led by Noelle Duley with 43 kills, Bailey DeSander with 32 digs, Caroline Talaga with 5 blocks, Caitlin Pistro nailed 11 aces and Betsy Cook dished out 105 assists.

The Falcons improve to 43-9-2 on the year.  They have little time to rest up before districts begin Monday night at 5:30 at John Glenn against first round opponent Saginaw Carrollton.

Boys Varsity Cross Country, Girls Varsity Cross Country · Cross Country Regional Write-Up

Both the boys and girls cross-country teams traveled to Delta College to compete in the division two MHSAA regional.  The weather was perfect with temperatures in the low 40’s for most of the day.  Combined between teams we had 12 runners turn in PR’s and one run a season best time.  Running PR’s were; Caitlyn Mieske, Hannah Niederquell, Hope Kloha, Audrey Short, Analise McMillan, Keeler Steffen, Darren Bila, Matt Rogers, Austin Whyte, Carter Vasicek, Mason Metiva, and Eli Folts.  Congratulations to John Kaczor on running a season best time.  It truly was a great day for cross-country!  As the season has officially ended the coaching staff would like to thank all of the athletes for their hard work and dedication all season long.  We would also like to thank all of the parents for their support and volunteerism all season long.  The kind of support we received this season makes our job so much easier and more enjoyable!  Thank you for that.  Lastly, I want to thank our seniors; Kaylee Argyle, John Kaczor, Matt Rogers, Andrew Youngstrom, Brad Kalinowski, and Brenden Klich.  Thank you for all your contributions to our cross-country program.  We wish you the best of luck in everything you do.
