The Freeland Falcons punched their ticket to the team state wrestling tournament Wednesday night, by knocking off Chippewa Hills 41-29 in the Regional Final. In a contest that went down to the wire, Freeland was able to push the pace and get bonus point victories from Eli Murphy (160), Nolan VanLoo (171), Noah Graham (103), Gibby Shepard (112), Tyler Tomasek (130), Wilson Longenecker (140) and Cole Fournier (145). Also recording a key win for the Falcons was Ty Fournier (125).
Captains Tomasek, VanLoo, C. Fournier and Longenecker led the way for Freeland- followed by their Freshman teammates, who are part of a deep 14 member Freshman class. In what was a total team effort, also competing hard and contributing were Jacob Stevens (152), Nate Helmreich (189), Adam Brewster (215), Luke Bercel (285), Wil Smith (119) and Cayden Remainder (135).
Prior to the finals match, Freeland was able to knock off Ogemaw Heights 63-18 to set up the pivotal matchup with Chippewa Hills. This is the first time Freeland has advanced to the team state finals since 2004.
