Fifteen of the top TVC volleyball teams met at Alma High School on Saturday. For fourteen of those teams there was some doubt in the outcome of each game. For # 2 ranked Class B defending tourney champ North Branch however, there was only 1 uncertainty; who besides them would advance to the championship game?
Early in the day, the Freeland Falcons began to answer that question while sweeping thru pool play by defeating Essexville Garber 25-19, 25-20 and St Louis 25-12, 25-19 to earn a #2 seed in the Gold Division. They swept 7thseeded Garber again 25-7, 25-19 and Valley Lutheran 25-19, 25-21 to earn a spot in the championship game versus North Branch.
The Lady Falcons would lose both games against the Broncos by identical 17-25 scores. Freeland did however lead 4-1 early in set one after a Caitlin Pistro ace. North Branch rallied to tie the game at 10-10 before their combination of strong hitting and defense prove too much for Freeland. In set two, the Falcons again led 6-5 on a Betsy Cook kill, and led again at 8-7 on a Taylor Bakos ace. North Branch then went on a 7-3 scoring run to take a 3 point lead and never looked back.
On the day, the Falcons were led by Noelle Duley with 43 kills, Bailey DeSander with 32 digs, Caroline Talaga with 5 blocks, Caitlin Pistro nailed 11 aces and Betsy Cook dished out 105 assists.
The Falcons improve to 43-9-2 on the year. They have little time to rest up before districts begin Monday night at 5:30 at John Glenn against first round opponent Saginaw Carrollton.
