The Freeland girls’ volleyball team moved into sole possession of first place in the TVC with a hard-fought four set victory over Class B 7th ranked rival Swan Valley in Freeland Wednesday night. Each match was decided by 3 points or less with scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-22 and 27-25.
In set 1 the Vikings lead early by scores of 8-7 and 21-19 before two Bailey DeSander aces secured the win. The Vikings found their attack in Game 2 and stormed to a 9-4 lead before Freeland stopped the bleeding and tied the set at 19 on a Swan Valley attack error. A Kristin Huebner kill put Swan Valley ahead to stay at 23-21 and traded side outs to tie the match at 1-1.
It was a back and forth battle in set 3 and a Caroline Talaga block put Freeland up 15-12, followed by Kennedy Wale ace that moved Freeland ahead 22-20. Both teams traded side-outs until Freeland prevailed to give them a one set lead going into set 4.
In the final set, both teams traded big-time kills with long rallies, one-armed digs and amazing saves that frequently brought the partisan crowd and vocal Freeland student section to their feet. In the end, it took 27 points and a Noelle Duley kill to finally finish off the Vikings for the night.
The Falcons were led by Bailey DeSander with 65 digs, and Caitlinn Pistro and Noelle Duley with 17 kills each. Elli Howard contributed 2 aces, Taylor Bakos 4 blocks and Betsy Cook dished out 39 assists.
The Falcons improve to 27-5-2, 4-0 in conference and play next on Saturday at the St Johns tournament.
